Stories & Insights - Meet Brian Buturla
We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brian Buturla a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The Story Behind the Private Studio:
More than 30 years ago, I was training clients inside a large commercial gym in lower Fairfield County. It was everything you would expect, crowded, loud, competitive, and distracting. But there was one space that changed everything. In the back of the gym, there was a small, quiet room. No noise. No chaos. Just focus. Whenever a prospective client came in, I would walk them past the busy gym floor and bring them into that space. The energy immediately shifted. Conversations became clearer. Goals became more specific. And most importantly, execution became precise.
That’s where the breakthrough happened. Clients began achieving results faster than expected: faster recovery from injuries, more efficient weight loss, and higher levels of athletic performance. It became obvious to me that the environment itself was the advantage. Focus. Privacy. Precision. That realization became the foundation of my life’s work. I began training clients privately, first in homes, then eventually creating my own fully private studio designed to replicate and elevate that experience.
At the same time, I noticed something similar in yoga. Many studios were overcrowded, impersonal, and distracting, far from what yoga is meant to be. So I built a different model: a clean, quiet, highly personalized space where individuals could practice, think, breathe, and reset, without interruption. The results went far beyond fitness. Clients made major life decisions with clarity, professionals advanced their careers, students achieved academic success, and individuals navigated life transitions with strength and calm. This wasn’t just training or yoga anymore. It was a controlled environment for transformation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
About Brian Buturla & The Private Studio Experience:
I’m Brian Buturla, founder of a completely private personal training and yoga studio in Norwalk, CT. For over three decades, I’ve worked with individuals who want more than just a workout, they want answers. Many of my clients come to me after trying everything, including drugs and surgeries, physical therapy, chiropractic care, traditional gym programs, and group fitness classes. Yet something still isn’t right.
They’re dealing with chronic back, neck, or joint pain, mobility restrictions, lingering injuries, and imbalances that no one has fully solved. That’s where my work begins. I specialize in corrective exercise, injury rehabilitation, functional strength development, private yoga instruction, performance enhancement, and personalized nutrition and lifestyle coaching. Every session is one-on-one, fully customized, and built around your specific body, not a template.
As a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist, Certified Nutrition Coach, and 1,000-Hour Registered Dharma Yoga Teacher, I combine science-based training with deep mind-body awareness. This is not a gym. This is not a class. This is a private, by-appointment experience designed for individuals who value discretion and focus, expect a high level of expertise, want measurable results, and prefer quality over quantity.
Many of my clients are physicians and healthcare professionals, executives and business owners, attorneys and financial professionals, athletes and golfers or tennis players, as well as yoga teachers and movement specialists, people who are used to performing at a high level and expect the same from their training. All services are available both in-studio in Norwalk, CT, and live virtual worldwide. The virtual experience is not passive or generic, it’s live, interactive, and just as personalized as training in the Private Studio. You press a button, and your trainer is there.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A Defining Pivot: Building a Virtual Training Model:
In March 2020 when COVID hit, everything changed overnight. With the statewide shutdown, my studio was forced to close. The next morning, I came across a small headline: “Are you ready for the virtual takeover?” In that moment I had immediate clarity. I wasn’t closed, I was shifting. Within hours, I contacted every client on my schedule. Within days, 95% of my business was restored, clients were training from home, and my wife Colleen and I personally helped clients set up their devices.
By week two, we were fully operational again. But something unexpected happened. Clients didn’t just maintain progress they improved physically, mentally, and emotionally. And I reconnected with people I hadn’t worked with in years, clients who had moved away but could now train with me again. What started as a major blow to my small business became a major advantage. I was busier than ever.
Today, many of those clients are still training with me virtually more than six years later. The model is simple: live, personalized, effective. Not pre-recorded. Not generic. Real training, in real time.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building a Reputation: Results When It Matters Most:
My reputation has been built during the moments when people need help the most. When life disrupts everything – injury, surgery, chronic pain, career stress, personal loss, and major life transitions – these are the moments where generic training programs fail and where precise, intelligent training becomes essential.
I don’t just guide workouts, I guide people through rebuilding their body, their confidence, and their clarity. Clients often tell me that what they value most is not just the physical results, but the feeling of having someone who understands exactly what needs to be done, and how to do it. Someone who can simplify the complex, eliminate the guesswork, and deliver results efficiently.
Over the past 30 years, that consistency has built trust across a wide range of high-level professionals and individuals. At the core, my work is about this: helping you move better, feel stronger, think clearer and operate at a higher level in every area of your life.
